My Story
Introducing Darryl 'Big D' Harper: a visionary music producer, singer, writer, and author whose multi-platinum success speaks to his exceptional talent. His innovative approach and broad musical range have left a lasting impact on modern soundscapes.
Harper launched his professional career in 1995 as an R&B writer and vocalist with Death Row Records in Los Angeles. It was there that he developed a signature sound that contributed to redefining West Coast hip-hop during the 1990s. His work reached global recognition in 1996 with his contributions to Makaveli, the groundbreaking album by Tupac Shakur—an enduring body of work that continues to influence artists worldwide.
At his core, Harper is a storyteller. His passion for music began in his teenage years as a writer and singer, where he cultivated a natural ability to compose and perform. In his early twenties, he was mentored by legendary figures, including members of Sly and the Family Stone and the highly respected Wilton Felder of The Jazz Crusaders. These experiences helped refine his artistry and solidify his path as a creative force in the industry.
Raised in Long Beach, California, Harper’s journey is rooted in resilience and determination. The challenges he faced growing up shaped his perspective and work ethic, ultimately guiding him toward a career that would leave a lasting mark on music history.
Over the years, Harper has collaborated with an elite roster of artists, including Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Eminem, Scarface, Wilton Felder, Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, and Usher. His extensive catalog includes numerous Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum projects, with millions of records sold worldwide.
Following a decade-long hiatus, Harper returns with a renewed creative vision. Expanding beyond music, he is stepping into the literary world with his debut book set for release in summer 2026, alongside a documentary project and new music. This next chapter reflects his continued evolution as an artist and storyteller.
